Every handful of ashes was once a blazing flame, but after being extinguished, it settled into soil that nourishes new life. The metal petals of the king protea are wrapped in ashes, just like the South African people tempering suffering into nutrients for moving forward – the violence of colonialism and the tearing apart of racial segregation finally gave birth to the “Rainbow Nation” described by Mandela in the ashes. Today’s South Africa still has challenges like the flickering of unextinguished cigarette butts, but the meaning of the ashtray is always clear: the real power lies in accepting the burning pain of the past and letting it settle into the origin of hope in time. Just like the king protea is reborn in the scorched earth, the soul of a nation can always bloom with a brighter rainbow light above the ashes.
